Guy Roberts is from the Pietermaritzburg area, and attended the Howard College Campus of the University of Natal in Durban, from which he graduated in 1980 with the degrees BCom LLB. He then served articles of clerkship with the firm then known as Rutsch von Klemperer & Co, and on completion of his articles and admission as an attorney in 1983, joined the firm Tomlinson Francis & Co (which was TMJ's original predecessor-in-practice) as a professional assistant until 1986 when he was admitted as a partner of that firm. He has remained with the firm since then.

After admission as an attorney, Guy also qualified as a conveyancer and notary, and has concentrated on property-related areas of practice, including property transfers, mortgage and notarial bonds, bank work, private and public servitudes, mineral contracts, antenuptial contracts, and drafting of property sale agreements and related transactions.
